Clinton, Soros & others Honored / Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded today
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Democratic philanthropist George Soros and actor-director Denzel Washington are set to be awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor. President Joe Biden will bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Saturday afternoon to 19 of the most famous names in politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy and science. The White House says the recipients have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.” Other awardees include Bono, Magic Johnson and Michael J. Fox.
Six days of funeral observances for former President Jimmy Carter are set to take place in Georgia, where he died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. The ceremonies beginning Saturday reflect Carter's climb up the political ladder, from the tiny town of Plains, Georgia, to decades on the global stage as a humanitarian. The motorcade will travel through his boyhood family farm and continue to the Georgia Capitol where he served as governor. Then he will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center, before the ceremonies move to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.
