$5 Million Worth Of Meth Found In Fake Watermelons In CA

8 weeks ago U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents discovered nearly two tons of meth hidden inside fake watermelons at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego earlier this week. The contraband, worth over $5 million, was concealed among real watermelons in a shipment from Mexico. The drugs were found when a 29-year-old driver was selected for a secondary inspection, leading officers to remove and examine the suspicious fruit. Inside, they found 1,220 bright green packages resembling watermelons, but instead filled with meth.

"As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue finding new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country," said Rosa E. Hernandez, Otay Mesa Port Director.

The meth packages were tested, confirmed and subsequently seized and the driver has been handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further probing.
