Johnson narrowly reelected speaker/Conservatives demand change
Mike Johnson has been reelected as House speaker. But there's a difficult year ahead. Johnson faces many of the same demands from conservatives that led to the ouster of his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy. But the stakes are far higher now as Republicans try to deliver on President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda. Even after Johnson’s victory, some GOP lawmakers openly discussed what might trigger his removal as speaker. The House Freedom Caucus released a letter signed by 11 members demanding that Johnson deliver ambitious policy goals, including enacting permanent border security changes, making aggressive federal spending cuts and banning members of Congress from stock trading.
The judge in President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money case has made a dramatic decision that could nevertheless bring the case to a muted end. In a ruling Friday, Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan scheduled the sentencing for 10 days before Trump’s inauguration. But the judge indicated that he’s leaning toward a sentence that would amount to just closing the case. Trump wants the conviction thrown out and the case dismissed, and his communications director said Friday the president-elect will “keep fighting.”
