Judge Limits ICE Tear Gas Use At Portland Protests

A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily restricted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers from using tear gas and other chemical munitions against peaceful protesters in Portland.

The 14‑day order follows incidents at the ICE facility where demonstrators and journalists, including elderly participants, were reportedly targeted with chemical agents.

U.S. District Judge Michael Simon said the restrictions are meant to protect First Amendment rights, allowing the use of force only in situations where deadly force is justified.

The temporary limitation stems from a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Oregon, which argued that the use of tear gas against peaceful demonstrators violated constitutional protections.
