New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in “Jurassic Park,” “The Piano” and “The Hunt for Red October,” has died at the age of 78.

Neill’s family announced his death Monday but did not provide a cause. The family said the actor was cancer-free at the time of his death.

Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. He later said the cancer was in remission following treatment.

The versatile actor built a career that spanned independent films, period dramas, thrillers and major Hollywood blockbusters. He became internationally recognized for playing paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 film “Jurassic Park,” later returning to the role in two sequels.

His other notable films included the romantic drama “The Piano,” the submarine thriller “The Hunt for Red October,” the maritime thriller “Dead Calm” and the science-fiction horror film “Event Horizon.”

Neill was regarded as one of New Zealand’s most celebrated actors and was part of a generation of performers and filmmakers from Australia and New Zealand who achieved international success beginning in the late 1970s.
