Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Interrupted By Pro-Palestine Protest
1 week ago
Pro-Palestinian protesters briefly disrupted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, calling attention to the war in Gaza. Police arrested 21 demonstrators who sat on the parade route holding Palestinian flags and a banner reading “Don’t Celebrate Genocide”. Shouting “free Palestine” and “thousands of innocent children,” the group was cleared by police without incident, ensuring the parade’s continuation. Footage showed officers swiftly removing protesters as the Ronald McDonald float passed.
The New York Police Department stated the demonstrators were initially asked to leave before bicycle-mounted officers intervened. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who recently took office, said security preparations were robust despite not anticipating protesters.
Spectators braved wet weather under ponchos and umbrellas to enjoy the parade’s signature giant balloons, floats, and live performances. Macy’s executive producer Will Coss praised the event’s ability to spread joy to millions, despite the interruption.
