Vance Boelter, the man serving two life sentences plus 40 years after pleading guilty to federal charges in the killings of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, has made his initial appearance in state court.
The hearing was procedural and comes less than two weeks after Boelter was sentenced in federal court. Prosecutors allege he also critically wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, during the attacks.
If convicted on the state charges, Boelter faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
