New Judge To Consider Karmelo Anthony Retrial
3 hours ago
A new judge will decide whether Karmelo Anthony should receive a new murder trial in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet.
Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in June and sentenced to 35 years in prison after jurors rejected his claim of self-defense. His attorneys argue several issues during the proceedings deprived him of a fair trial, including courtroom restrictions and jury instructions.
The judge who presided over the original trial, John Roach Jr., was removed from the case Wednesday after Anthony’s attorneys raised concerns about his impartiality. The defense pointed in part to a television interview Roach gave after the verdict in which he said jurors “got it right.”
Judge Michael Chitty has been assigned to consider Anthony’s request for a new trial. The hearing is set for Thursday.
