A fatal police shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, is under investigation after an officer shot and killed a man authorities say stabbed the officer while resisting arrest.

According to Madison police, officers responded to reports of a man attempting to enter parked vehicles when they confronted the suspect. During the encounter, investigators say the suspect stabbed one of the officers, prompting another officer to open fire. The suspect died at the scene, while the injured officer was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The shooting prompted demonstrations Tuesday evening, with protesters marching through downtown Madison to the Wisconsin State Capitol and calling for greater police accountability.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in the state. Officials have not yet released the names of the officer or the man who was killed. The investigation remains ongoing.
