Proposition 50 Passes In California, Giving Democrats Potential Boost In Congress

Voters have overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure that will reshape the state’s congressional districts for the next three election cycles.

The measure replaces maps drawn by an independent commission with new boundaries created by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, a move expected to add up to five Democratic-held seats in Congress.

Proposition 50 was introduced in response to Texas’ Republican-led redistricting, which added several GOP seats earlier this year.

With California’s vote, Democrats are hoping to regain the upper hand in the fight for control of the U.S. House in the 2026 midterms.
