The U.S. Secret Service says a major operation in South Florida prevented an estimated $13.5 million in potential fraud after agents uncovered illegal card-skimming devices across the Miami area.
Agents partnered with local law enforcement to inspect nearly 3,000 payment terminals, gas pumps and ATMs at 378 businesses. The operation resulted in the removal of 13 illegal skimming devices designed to steal customers’ credit, debit and EBT card information.
Authorities say criminals can use information captured by the devices to create fraudulent cards or make unauthorized purchases. The Secret Service estimates the skimmers removed during the operation could have caused millions of dollars in losses.
The operation is part of an ongoing federal effort to combat electronic benefit theft and other payment-card fraud across the country.
