Trump Defends Iran Conflict During Republican Convention In Dallas

President Donald Trump strongly defended the U.S. conflict with Iran Wednesday night, using his address at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas to argue that military action was necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“We have no choice, right?” Trump told the crowd as he discussed the conflict. “Can Iran have a nuclear weapon? Absolutely not.”
Trump repeatedly returned to Iran during his nearly two-hour address, arguing that the United States had to act against the country's nuclear program. He also warned that additional military action could be taken against Iran's Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility.
The president acknowledged earlier Wednesday that the conflict and resulting pressure on gasoline prices could continue beyond November's midterm elections. Oil prices have risen sharply amid the fighting and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also accused Iran of hoping Republicans lose control of Congress so it can negotiate with a Democratic-controlled government, framing the conflict as one of several major issues at stake in the midterms.
Beyond Iran, Trump made a major economic pledge during the convention, promising a $5,000
“Trump dividend” to American adults if Republicans maintain control of Congress. Trump said the money would have to be spent in the United States, but did not provide details about how the payments would be funded or implemented.
