Trump Draws Cheers In Ireland After Announcing End to Irish Whiskey Tariff

President Donald Trump received loud cheers in Ireland Sunday after announcing that the United States would remove its tariff on Irish whiskey.
Trump made the announcement during the trophy ceremony at the Irish Open in Doonbeg, where he had spent part of his visit attending the golf tournament at his Trump International Golf Links resort.
The president said Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Irish Open winner Shane Lowry were among those who had raised the issue with him.
“Everybody’s been bugging me,” Trump joked before announcing that, on behalf of the United States, he would take the tariffs off Irish whiskey.
The announcement drew cheers from the crowd, with some spectators chanting “U-S-A.”
Irish whiskey had been subject to a 10% U.S. tariff as part of duties imposed on European Union wine and spirits. The rate had previously been 15% before being reduced in July.
The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed Trump’s announcement, saying a return to tariff-free trade would benefit businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. The United States is the largest export market for Irish whiskey.
Trump did not immediately provide a timeline for when the tariff removal would take effect.
