President Donald Trump welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to the White House as the two leaders looked to strengthen relations between the United States and Iraq.

Trump praised the relationship between the two countries and said he and al-Zaidi shared strong chemistry during their meeting.

The talks focused on expanding economic cooperation, increasing energy partnerships and supporting Iraq’s efforts to disarm Iran-backed militias.

Iraqi officials also said an oil pipeline agreement involving U.S. and Qatari companies is expected to be announced later this week.

The meeting comes as Washington seeks to deepen ties with Baghdad amid continued instability across the Middle East.
