Trump Meets With Zelenskyy In Talks to End War

There are signs of progress toward ending Russia’s war in Ukraine following President Donald Trump’s weekend meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The two leaders met at Trump’s Florida resort to discuss a proposed peace plan, which includes
U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump said that Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” to a settlement, though negotiators are still working through key issues, including territorial withdrawals and the future of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Zelenskyy expressed a desire for longer-term U.S. security commitments, ideally up to 50 years, to deter future Russian aggression. Details of the guarantees have not been made public, but they are expected to include monitoring mechanisms and an international presence.

Kyiv’s allies plan to meet in Paris in early January to finalize each country’s contributions to the security guarantees. A full peace deal would also require a ceasefire of at least 60 days before Ukraine could hold a national referendum to approve the plan.
