President Donald Trump offered new insight into his decision to launch strikes against Iran while speaking at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas this week, an event carried live on Salem News Channel.
During his remarks, Trump said the timing of the initial strikes was urgent because he believed Iran was less than a month away from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“They were less than a month away,” Trump told the crowd, describing the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to the United States and its allies.
Trump has repeatedly cited Iran’s nuclear program as a central justification for the U.S. military campaign. Speaking to reporters before traveling to Dallas Wednesday, the president similarly argued that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon justified the ongoing conflict.
Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is not intended to produce nuclear weapons.
