President Donald Trump says a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as early as Wednesday or Thursday, raising hopes for easing tensions in the Middle East and restoring commercial shipping through one of the world's most important energy corridors.
Trump said negotiations are focused on reopening the strategic waterway, which has seen shipping severely disrupted by the conflict with Iran. Regional officials say a proposal under discussion would route ships into the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled channel and out through a route managed by Oman.
The Trump administration has previously said it would not support any agreement that gives Iran control over the Strait of Hormuz. Nearly one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supplies normally pass through the waterway, making its reopening a key priority for global energy markets.
