Trump Says U.S. Doing Well Despite High Interest Rates

President Donald Trump says Americans should not be concerned about recent volatility in the U.S. bond market, arguing that the economy remains strong despite elevated interest rates.

Speaking to reporters at the White House Wednesday, Trump was asked whether Americans should be worried about turmoil in the bond market. “No, I don’t think so,” the president responded, pointing to what he described as strong economic performance despite high borrowing costs.

The comments come after long-term Treasury yields climbed to their highest levels in nearly two decades amid concerns over inflation, government debt and the ongoing conflict with Iran. The 30-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2007 earlier this week.

The Treasury Department has since moved to ease pressure in the market by doubling the size of its planned purchases of longer-term government debt. The announcement helped push yields lower Wednesday, although analysts warn underlying concerns over inflation and federal borrowing remain.

Trump has repeatedly criticized high interest rates and pushed for lower borrowing costs, while maintaining that the U.S. economy continues to perform well despite them.
