Trump Signals Possible Texas Visit To Boost Ken Paxton Ahead Of Midterms
6 days ago
President Donald Trump is signaling he could return to Texas to campaign for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton as the state prepares to begin in-person early voting Monday.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, Trump expressed strong support for the Texas attorney general, praising his record while acknowledging that Paxton has faced controversy.
Trump suggested he would travel to Texas if his presence was needed to help Paxton in the final weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.
"Ken is a little bit controversial," Trump said, joking that he himself was not a controversial figure.
Despite that characterization, the president praised Paxton's tenure as Texas attorney general, describing him as one of the strongest state attorneys general in the country.
"He may have been the best attorney general in this country for many, many years," Trump said. "He was amazing as the attorney general."
Trump specifically highlighted Paxton's work on election-related issues and his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"He was probably the best in the history of Texas," Trump said, pointing to Paxton's record on voter fraud and COVID-19 policies.
Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico in the race for the U.S. Senate, a contest drawing national attention as Republicans and Democrats compete for control of Congress.
The president's remarks come as Texas prepares to open in-person early voting Monday, October 19, giving voters an opportunity to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day.
While Trump has not announced a specific date for another Texas campaign appearance, his comments suggest he is prepared to take a more active role in supporting Paxton as the election approaches.
