U.S. Targets Suspected Drug Traffickers Off Venezuela Coast

President Donald Trump said he authorized another strike on a Venezuelan boat suspected of smuggling drugs, marking the latest U.S. operation targeting narcotics traffickers in the Caribbean. Officials said the strike occurred in international waters and that there were survivors.

Trump defended the operation during remarks at the White House, saying the action was necessary to combat drug trafficking and hold Venezuela accountable.

“I authorized for two reasons, really,” Trump said. “Number one, they have emptied their prisons into the United States of America. They came in through the border because we had an open border policy. A lot of these countries — they’re not the only one — but they’re the worst abuser.”

The president added that large amounts of drugs continue to enter the United States from Venezuela, much of it moved by sea.
