Federal authorities say they have stopped an alleged ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting the New York State Capitol and state lawmakers in Albany.

The Justice Department says 35-year-old Albany resident Jessica Bowie was arrested Wednesday after taking possession of what she believed was an explosive device. Prosecutors allege Bowie intended to use the device to attack the Capitol while state senators were meeting inside.

According to federal investigators, Bowie repeatedly visited the Capitol grounds, photographed the building and discussed plans to cause extensive damage and kill lawmakers. Authorities say she also pledged allegiance to ISIS and intended to flee afterward to ISIS-controlled territory.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force led the investigation with assistance from the Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, New York State Police and local law enforcement. Bowie is charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul praised law enforcement for stopping the alleged plot and said there is no immediate threat to the public.
