Layoffs Begin At U.S. Health Agencies

1 day ago The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's director during President Barack Obama’s administration says he's concerned about cuts to the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health. Employees across the massive U.S. Health and Human Services Department began receiving notices of dismissal Tuesday in an overhaul ultimately expected to lay off up to 10,000 people. The notices came days after President Donald Trump moved to strip workers of their collective bargaining rights at HHS and other federal agencies. Some of the layoffs are in Atlanta, where the CDC is based. Obama era CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden says weakening tobacco prevention “is a gift to Big Tobacco that would guarantee more addiction, disease, and death.”
