A man accused of operating a secret Chinese government outpost in New York City’s Chinatown has been convicted of acting as an illegal foreign agent.

Prosecutors say Lu Jianwang helped run the site on behalf of China’s government and deleted messages during an FBI investigation into the operation.

Defense attorneys argued the office functioned as a community center that assisted Chinese immigrants with services such as renewing driver’s licenses remotely.
