Paris Mayor Wants To Keep Olympic Rings Permanently On Eiffel Tower

6 weeks ago Paris' most famous monument, the Eiffel Tower, should keep the Olympic rings it has been sporting since early June, the city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, announced on Saturday (August 31).

A set of five new rings should be installed in the near future, Hidalgo said in an interview with newspaper Ouest France, as the current ones, which weigh 30 tonnes, are too heavy for the tower's structure to support them durably.

The mayor added that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had approved her idea.

The French government yet has to make sure the installation is safe in the long term, that it would not damage the tower and that the rings can be removed if needed, before the green light can be given.
