The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating after a Frontier Airlines plane struck and killed a person on the runway during takeoff at Denver International Airport.

The Frontier flight, which was headed to Los Angeles, aborted takeoff late Friday night after smoke was reported inside the cabin, according to airline officials.

Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides and transported back to the terminal. Airport officials said 12 passengers suffered minor injuries and five people were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Some passengers also reported problems during the evacuation as investigators continue reviewing the incident.
