South Korean Military Says North Korea Launched More Than 400 Trash Balloons

1 week ago North Korea resumed their launch of balloons carrying bags of trash towards the south, some of which fell in South Korea, apparently in a rush but proving ineffective due to adverse wind direction, South Korea’s military said on Thursday (September 5).

More than 400 balloons have been launched since late Wednesday (September 4) and about 20 have been discovered landing in areas north of Seoul, according to the military. They contained trash and no materials that posed a safety risk, they added.

The North first sent balloons carrying trash and even manure in May, reciprocating a campaign carried out for years by North Korean defectors and activists in the South sending bags stuffed with anti-Pyongyang leaflets with money and USB sticks.

North Korea has reacted angrily to such campaigns because the regime considers the propaganda messages as a threat to its control, South Korean experts and officials have said.
