VP Harris to preside over Trump certification

1 day ago VP Harris to preside over Trump certification

The congressional joint session to count electoral votes is expected to be much less eventful than the certification four years ago. On Jan. 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Donald Trump tried to stop the count to certify Joe Biden’s victory. This time, Trump is returning to office after winning the 2024 election that began with Biden as his party’s nominee and ended with Vice President Kamala Harris atop the ticket. On Monday, she'll preside over the certification of her own loss, fulfilling the constitutional role in the same way that Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, did in 2021.

Trump sentencing set for Jan. 10
The judge in President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money case has made a dramatic decision that could nevertheless bring the case to a muted end. In a ruling Friday, Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan scheduled the sentencing for 10 days before Trump’s inauguration. But the judge indicated that he’s leaning toward a sentence that would amount to just closing the case. Trump wants the conviction thrown out and the case dismissed, and his communications director said Friday the president-elect will “keep fighting.”
